Phonetic Restoration of Temporally Reversed Speech
نویسندگان
چکیده
Early study showed that temporally reversed speech may still be very intelligible. The present work further assessed the role of acoustic cues accounting for the intelligibility of temporally reversed speech. Mandarin sentences were edited to be temporally reversed. Experiment 1 preserved the original consonant segments, and experiment 2 only preserved the temporally reversed fine-structure waveform. Experimental results with normal-hearing listeners showed that for Mandarin speech, listeners could still perfectly understand the temporally reversed speech with a reversion duration up to 50 ms. Preserving original consonant segments did not significantly improve the intelligibility of the temporally reversed speech, suggesting that the reversion processing applied to vowels largely affected the intelligibility of temporally reversed speech. When the local short-time envelope waveform was removed, listeners could still understand stimuli with primarily temporally reversed finestructure waveform, suggesting the perceptual role of temporally reversed fine-structure to the intelligibility of temporally reversed speech.

Learning to recognize talkers from natural, sinewave, and reversed speech samples.
In 5 experiments, the authors investigated how listeners learn to recognize unfamiliar talkers and how experience with specific utterances generalizes to novel instances. Listeners were trained over several days to identify 10 talkers from natural, sinewave, or reversed speech sentences. The sinewave signals preserved phonetic and some suprasegmental properties while eliminating natural vocal q...
متن کاملOn the perception of similarity among talkers.
A listener who recognizes a talker notices characteristic attributes of the talker's speech despite the novelty of each utterance. Accounts of talker perception have often presumed that consistent aspects of an individual's speech, termed indexical properties, are ascribable to a talker's unique anatomy or consistent vocal posture distinct from acoustic correlates of phonetic contrasts. Accordi...
متن کامل2010, a Speech Oddity: Phonetic Transcription of Reversed Speech
Time reversal is often used in experimental studies on language perception and understanding, but little is known on its precise impact on speech sounds. Strikingly, some studies consider reversed speech chunks as “speech” stimuli lacking lexical information while others use them as “non speech” control conditions. The phonetic perception of reversed speech has not been thoroughly studied so fa...
متن کاملDenoising autoencoder-based speaker feature restoration for utterances of short duration
This paper describes a speaker feature restoration method for improving text-independent speaker recognition with short utterances. The method employs a denoising autoencoder (DAE) to compensate speaker features of a short utterance which contains limited phonetic information. It first estimates phonetic distribution in the utterance as posteriors based on speech models and then transforms an i...
متن کاملEnvelope information in speech processing: acoustic-phonetic analysis vs. auditory figure-ground segregation
Long-term envelope modulations (< 100Hz) influence the identification of speech in noise. It is not clear, however, whether this influence only takes place at the level of acoustic-phonetic analysis (phonetic identification) or if envelope fluctuations may also help in auditory figureground segregation (e.g. separation of speech from concurrent backgrounds). An experiment is presented in which ...
